Festival of the Wagon

In the southwest corner of Italy in the region of Campania, there is a celebration in September known as the Festival of the Wagon or Festa Del Carro. The festival celebrates the Madonna dell’Addolarata or Our Lady of Sorrows. The main church of Mirabella Eclano celebrates and honors the saint.

Originally it is believed that the holiday came from the offering of grain to the goddess Cybele or Gaia the goddess of the earth. Here wagons were laden with sheaves of wheat and processed through the streets of the city. Later the Roman Catholic Church converted this to Our Lady of Sorrows.

What happened to the sheaves of wheat drawn in the parade? well, there are still straw tributes, but they are far more grand. An 80 foot tall (24 meter) tower is now dragged through the procession. This Grande Tirata or Tirata Del Carro (Grand pull or pulling the wagon) have taken its place.

Made of wood structure and plaited straw, these are among the most intricate examples of straw work in all of Europe. Held in place with tethered cables for stability nearly 80% of the tower is visible over a large crowd. This event is the 3rd Saturday of September in Mirabella Eclano and is a must see for anyone interested in folk art of straw art.

Festa Del Carro

Nell’angolo sud-ovest d’Italia, nella regione Campania, vi è una celebrazione nel mese di settembre conosciuto come il Festival del carro. Il festival celebra la Madonna dell’Addolarata. La chiesa principale di Mirabella Eclano celebra e onora il santo. In origine si ritiene che la festa veniva da l’offerta di grano alla dea Cibele o Gaia la dea della terra.
